Bind-in Cards

This assignment was awesome, very challenging, but a very good experience. The task was to duplicate a bind in card. My magazine was W magazine and my bind in card was a full-page. This was created in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.
The hardest part about this assignment was the measurements and getting everything in the right place because the ruler in InDesign would change (in one zoom value it would only have 7 tick marks and in another it would have 14) but eventually I got it and just had to make sure I was zoomed in at the same value at all times.
Another difficult part was the fonts. It turns out that W uses its own font called Aventir. It took me a couple of days of font hunting to realize this thanks to a google search. I ended up finding the font on identifont and that made things a lot easier! For a lot of the random things like the number 1, the font isn’t quite right, but I couldn’t find any font closer than Myriad Pro. The large money sign was also hard to find and it turned out to be Charcoal CY, which is only used for the money sign. I thought it was interesting that on one sheet they decided to use more than five different fonts. It made my job difficult, but it also grabs the viewer’s attention with certain sections bolded and larger than others and certain sections are in very fine print, almost so you don’t see them.
I liked this project, even though it was a challenge, it was an adventure.
The next biggest challenge was the logo. Originally I “made” the logo using the font Onyx and basically overlapping many W’s. It looked a little weird… So finally I decided to trace the logo from a scanned image using the pen tool and I filled in and outlines the correct parts and ended up with a replica! Yay! I copied this process for the smaller logos on each card, but when I was resizing them the filling in right arm of the W’s disappeared (it’s in the original file)
