Pretty Lights Concert Poster

For this assignment we were to create a poster for our favorite band as if they were playing a show at our school. The goal was to capture a part of your artist’s style in the poster. My artist is Pretty Lights, other wise known as Derek Vincent, a DJ unlike many others that blends modern sounds and “whomp whomps” as I call them, with early records like Etta Jones, Judy Clay and William Bell and many more artists. Derek as well as similar artists are said to be creating a ‘new generation of music‘ blending the old and the new sounds together.
This poster took some time to do. I began by looking for the prefect font! I found both of the fonts I used on fontspace.com. The main font that I used on the words ‘pretty lights’ is called CANDY INC. I chose this font because I was originally looking for a font that is on an old pretty lights poster, but it turns out that it was custom-made, then I found this one and I liked the “raw” look and flow to it. I also loved how you can see little specs of green through it and I thought that would help to emphasize the idea of the green lasers passing behind the words.
For the sub text that states the information about the concert I used the font appleberry (fontspace.com). I chose this font because it is similar to CANDY INC., but is more legible for small text.
The green lines are meant to, first attract your attention with the use of a vanishing point and second capture the atmosphere from the show. Having been to a couple Pretty Lights shows, one of my favorite parts is the use of this lime green fan laser and how it interacts with the crowd (screen cap) so I wanted to try to capture that in my poster and hopefully trigger a similar memory in others who have seen such a sight.
The lasers were probably the most challenging thing on this poster. It was tedious to copy-paste the lines and then turn them just slightly, and line it up with the vanishing point, then do it again and again about a hundred times. Next, experimenting with different tools, I figured out how to delete only a section on each line so that when the line crossed paths with the letters the line would stop to give the illusion of the words floating in front of the lasers. I think that I could have done this a little better be creating the vanishing point lower on the page and had it angle upwards to give the illusion of it moving.
It was really fun to make this poster because I had always admired concert posters and now I know how easy it is to do.
